Above and Beyond the Call of Duty Award
ABCD Award

The Above and Beyond the Call of Duty Award was established in 2008 to recognize student employees in Purdue Dining & Catering and University Residences whose actions make a difference at the university and how they contribute to excellence within these two departments. It is awarded four times throughout the academic year and is a $300 award that was included in each of these student’s paychecks.

First-Year Student Success Award

The First-Year Student Success Award is awarded to a Dining & Catering student employee that is a freshman that shows great potential for growth and had started at work prior to September 15.

NSEA Student Employee of the Year Award

Each spring the National Student Employment Association coordinates a selection process and chooses the National Student Employee of the Year to recognize the outstanding contributions and achievements of students who work while attending college.

William H. “Bill” Rumple Residence Dining Hall Head Captain Award

This award was established in recognition of William and Tim Rumple. Both of these men provided outstanding service to University Residences Dining Services as former Head Waiters at Fowler Court and Cary Quadrangle. This award is given annually to a Student Manager or Student Coordinator in Residential Dining Services who has achieved distinction in leadership while employed for Dining Services.

Sarah Johnson Oustanding Student Employee of the Year Award

The Sarah Johnson Outstanding Student Employee of the Year Award Fund was established to recognize the many contributions of Sarah Johnson, former director of Residential Dining for University Residences. Sarah dedicated over 37 years to students at Purdue University and National Association of Colleges & University Food Services (NACUFS). The Outstanding Student Employee of the Year award is selected on reliability, quality of work, initiative, teamwork and contribution to Purdue Dining & Catering.

Wiltshire Work Ethic Award

This award recognizes a student whose work exemplifies the standards of excellence in quality and service for which Mrs. Wiltshire strove toward during her 25 years of service to the residence halls and Purdue University. Wiltshire Work Ethic Award is awarded to an Earhart student employee that has worked 2 semesters or longer, has a 2.5 GPA, and shows consistent and excellent work ethic.

MASEA (Midwest Association Student Employment Administrators) Purdue Student Supervisor of the Year

MASEA Student Supervisor of the Year Award is awarded to a Purdue Dining & Catering student supervisor. The student has to be in good academic standing, nominated by professional staff, and shows mentoring, professionalism, and excellent leadership.

Madonna Warren Outstanding Student Employee

Madonna Warren’s long career at Purdue began in 1937 when she served as a switchboard operator for the late Red Mackey, the former Purdue Athletic Director for whom Mackey Arena is named. She started her career at the Union working in the Browsing Room Library, which is now home to Purdue’s Welcome Center. She then began a long career handling Union Club Hotel reservations. Madonna left Purdue during WWII and worked in Chicago at the Drake Hotel, but then returned to the Union Club in 1948 to finish her career. Her deep love of students, the Union and Purdue at-large motivated her friends and colleagues to create an endowment in her memory, which funds both the annual Madonna Warren HTM Internships as well as this outstanding student employee award.

John C. Smalley Outstanding Student Employee Award

The John C. Smalley Outstanding Student Employee Award honors a man who was Director of the Purdue Memorial Union from 1960 to 1976 and who later became the first Vice President of Housing and Food Services here at Purdue. He had a well-known reputation for doing things first-class and for being a fair-but-firm administrator who stood up for his employees, including his student employees.

An endowment was established in his name by Union employees to honor an outstanding full-time staff member each year, and that endowment was expanded to also honor an outstanding student employee as well as an outstanding Purdue Student Union Board member.

Charles E. Dunn Outstanding Student Employee Award

The Charles E. Dunn Outstanding Student Employee Award honors a man who was Director of Purdue Memorial Union Foodservice from 1962 to 1993. This award was established by Mr. Terrence Kungel, a former Union employee, to honor Charles Dunn and to acknowledge that a student’s employment, his or her relationship with customers, peer workers and professional staff, provides a learning laboratory that adds significant value to the educational experience. Charley Dunn was a mentor and role model to Terry Kungel and to countless other student employees who had the privilege to work for him. He was well known for always going “the extra mile” to get the job done and for inspiring the same in those who worked for him.
